About Green Media
We are a grassroots media organization that works to advance the rights of local communities, mainly women who are involved in environmental conservation and their rights to land and natural resources, through media engagement, activism, and advocacy with the aim of influencing decision-makers and policies. We work with environmental defenders, including those defending indigenous communities, park rangers, campaigners, and activists against fossil fuels and extractivism in Africa.

Unveiling the Environmental Risks of EACOP: A Closer Examination of its Perils
Risk of oil spill
There's a risk of oil spills or leaks from the pipeline during its operation, which could have significant environmental consequences for terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, as well as local communities dependent on natural resources for their livelihoods. Spills can also contaminate soil, water sources, and agricultural lands, leading to long-term environmental damage.
Air Pollution
Construction activities such as excavation, earthmoving, and vehicular traffic can generate air pollutants such as dust, particulate matter, and diesel exhaust emissions, leading to air quality degradation in surrounding areas. Additionally, flaring of associated gases during oil extraction and processing can release greenhouse gases and air pollutants into the atmosphere.

"We denounce the weaponization of Uganda’s courts against climate, land and human rights defenders. We call for the immediate and unconditional release of these peaceful student protestors. They are simply asserting themselves as legitimate stakeholders in a project which stands to unravel the social fabric of many Ugandan communities."
said Nkurunziza Alphonse, one of the student leaders in Uganda.
“We strongly condemn using the judiciary to punish those with dissenting views against the EACOP project. Jailing peaceful protestors who were merely exercising their democratic right to petition their elected leaders sets an extremely dangerous precedent."
Climate Change
The extraction, transportation, and combustion of fossil fuels like crude oil contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, which are a major driver of climate change. The EACOP project could potentially increase carbon emissions and exacerbate climate change impacts in the region.
Deforestation and habitat destruction.
The construction of the pipeline may involve clearing vegetation and disrupting habitats along its route, including forests, wetlands, and other natural ecosystems. This can lead to loss of biodiversity and fragmentation of wildlife habitats.
